A spine board is an essential tool used in the medical industry to immobilize a patient's neck, spine, and head. These boards are mostly used for patients who have been in a traumatic accident or have a suspected spinal cord injury. When appropriately used, these boards can be highly effective in immobilizing the patient's head, neck, and spine while keeping them in a comfortable position.
1: Assess the Patient
Before you start using the spine board, it is necessary to assess the patient's condition and degree of injury. If the patient has severe neck pain or shows signs of paralysis, then they are most likely to have a severe spinal injury. In such cases, you should be extra careful and avoid unnecessary movements. If the patient is not seriously injured, it is best to give them a brief explanation of what you are about to do to ease their anxiety.
2: Positioning the Patient
The patient should lie on their back with their arms relaxed at their sides. You should try to pass a cervical collar carefully around their neck to immobilize the head, preventing any neck movements. If the patient has difficulty breathing, you can remove the collar a little to allow for ventilation. Ensure the patient's head is positioned correctly and aligned with their body, most preferably in a midline position. A pillow could be used to support the neck, but it should not be higher than 1.5 inches.
3: Securing the Patient
Once you have the patient positioned correctly, you need to secure them to the spine board. The board should be placed next to the patient. One person should hold the patient's head and neck while two others slide the board under the patient. Subsequently, two or more individuals should move into place and secure the straps across the patient's torso, hips, and feet. The arms should be placed across the body to provide adequate support.
4: Transporting the Patient
After securing the patient, the board can be carried to the ambulance or transport vehicle. Ensure that the board remains horizontally aligned and adequately supported throughout the journey. If possible, the board should be kept in an anti-shock position to prevent any jarring movements that can worsen the patient's condition.
