The Discovery Of Three White Pottery Hu Figurines From Tang Dynasty In South Hebei Province

Xinhua News Agency, Shijiazhuang, December 18 (Reporters Du Yifang and Cao Guochang) Reporters learned from Wenbao Institute of Nanhe County, Hebei Province that in early December, three white pottery Hu figurines were found during construction at a construction site in Zhaopai Village, Heguo Township, Nanhe County, and were identified by the local cultural relics department as white pottery Hu figurines of the early Tang Dynasty.

According to the appraisal, the three white pottery Hu figurines are respectively civilian figurines, warrior figurines and Hu Shang figurines.  The figures are plump, the pottery is crystal white, the design is simple and elegant, and the image is vivid.

The civilian figurines are 52 cm tall, with square turbans on their heads, high buns, thick sideburns, and big eyes looking straight ahead. He was dressed in an open-necked robe, a long rope tied around his waist, and his hands were holding the upper court water board.

The warrior figures are 54cm tall, wearing a warrior shawl cap, with twisted shoulder pad armour on their shoulders, high nose and deep eyes, long beard and chest, and holding hands.  He was wearing a short-sleeved corset, a short-sleeved hip skirt and knee-length boots.

Hu Shang figurines are only left with the head and the rest were destroyed during construction.  The Hu figurine is wearing a high bun with a tight mouth and a brim cap. It has thick eyebrows, deep eyes, a high nose bridge and a large ears with its moustache tilted up to both sides.

According to Xiao Zhonghuai, an expert on literature and history in Nanan County, the three Hu figurines were all buried together.   According to the analysis of funeral customs in the Tang Dynasty, the owner of the tomb should be an official of the Tang Dynasty.  The discovery of three white pottery Hu figurines has a high historical reference value for studying the social and economic development at that time, the foreign exchange along the Silk Road and funeral customs.

At present, cultural relic workers are carrying out rescue excavation on the construction site.
